Over this past weekend I decided that I would go ahead and try to “fix” my PS3 by flashing the recovery partition on it with KMEAW’s Custom Firmware for version 3.55. The reasoning is that while I trust friends of mine that I loan my games to that they won’t break them, I don’t trust their pets to not eat the discs or slobber all over them. If you’re wondering, CFW (or custom firmware) allows you to use backups of your games in case they get destroyed, however, be advised, that if you use CFW and you go to the PSN, there is a high chance your PS3 will get flagged as ‘modified’ and then you WILL be banned from the PSN.

Need more info? Here ya go….

Before We Begin:

What is the Firmware version of your PS3?

Is it 3.55? – If YES go to Part A, if it is NO, go to Part B

Part A – Excellent, go to the Things You Will Need section
Part B – Is your firmware below 3.55? If YES go to Part C, if no, go to Part D
Part C – You have under 3.55 OFW? Great, see Part A.
Part D – You’re over 3.55 (meaning you have 3.6, 3.61, or higher)? I’m sorry, you’re S.O.L.

Things You Will Need:

Prep-Work:

  1. Start off with downloading the files to your computer: OFW 3.55, CFW 3.55, MultiManager, Fat32Formatter
  2. Now that you have all the files, extract them to their own folders, we will use these files in a bit
  3. Insert USB thumb drive #1
    1. Open the GuiFormat application and format this USB thumb drive as Fat32 with the label “OFW355”
    2. After formatting is complete, create a folder on this thumb drive called “PS3” and then open that folder
    3. Create a new folder inside “PS3” called “Update” and open this folder
    4. Copy the file “PS3UPDAT.PUP” from the Official Sony 3.55 zip archive into this folder
    5. You should now have a structure like this “X:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP” where x is the drive of your USB thumb drive
    6. Unplug this thumb drive
  4. Inset USB thumb drive #2
    1. Open the GuiFormat application and format this USB thumb drive as Fat32 with the label “CFW355”
    2. After formatting is complete, create a folder on this thumb drive called “PS3” and then open that folder
    3. Create a new folder inside “PS3” called “UPDATE” and open this folder
    4. Copy the file “PS3UPDAT.PUP” from the KMEAW zip archive into this folder
    5. You should now have a structure like this “X:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP” where x is the drive of your USB thumb drive
    6. Open the folder you extracted the MultiMan files to and copy those files to the root of the USB thumb drive
    7. Your install package should be “X:/multiMAN ver 02.05.00 FULL (20110831-170000).pkg” (using this version of MMan)
    8. Copy over the pkg file from the BDEmu archive to your thumb drive (the one for KM)
    9. Unplug this thumb drive
  5. This ends the prep-work section
